Season and Fish in the Caribbean

The Caribbean region has a wide variety of fish species roaming in the Atlantic and the Caribbean sea, and the Dominican Republic happens to be in the middle of both oceans, providing a vantage point for sports fishermen. Sosua and Puerto Plata are located right on the Atlantic, which has top species such as the Blue Marlin, Yellow Fin Tuna, Mahi Mahi ( locally called Dorado ), Wahoo ( called Carite ), White Marlin, and Sailfish. Other species such as the red snapper, grouper, Jackfish, Barracuda, and Lion fish, add to the list ( it is longer than we can post here.

Atlantic Blue Marlin

Makaira nigricans is abundant on June through October. Nov, Dec, and Jan; can reach up to 1,800 lbs (818 kg ).

Mahi Mahi

Coryphaena hippurus is abundant on Jan.,Feb.,March, Oct.,Nov.,Dec; Mostly 33-40lb ( 15-18 kg ).


Sphyraena picudilla can be found almost year-round, with lowest presence around April through June.

Yellow Fin Tuna

Thunnus albacares are more abundant March through June. Can weight up to 400 lbs ( 180 kg ). This is the second largest tuna.

Sail Fish

Istiophorus platypterus thrives on Dec.,Jan., and Feb.; Also available the rest of the year. Weights up to 200 lbs ( 90 kg).

White Marlin

Kajikia albida is mostly found March through June, also available the rest of the year. Weights up to 182 lb ( 82 kg ). Also called billfish.

Jack Fish

Caranx lugubris is often found on Nov. through April, also available the rest of the year. Can weight up to 17 kg , and 1 meter in lenght.


Acanthocybium solandri thrives from October to March, also available the rest of the year. Weights up to 183 lb ( 83 kg ).

Goliath Grouper

Epinephelus itajara ( Atlantic Goliath Grouper ) is a bottom fishing species, found most of the year, weights up to 790lbs (360 kg ).

Pork Fish

Anisotremus virginicus is found mostly from Nov to June, available throughout the year in most reefs. It is a nocturnal species.

Lion Fish

Pterois, also called zebra fish, can be found year long. It is an invasive, venomous fish of tasty meat. It predates on native fish.

Red Snapper

Lutjanus campechanus , mostly fished using bottom bait or spear. Can weight up to 84 lb ( 38 kg ) abundant almost year round.
