This video is a tutorial on surviving animal attacks, included in this website for practical reasons. Sharks are among the most feared animals on Earth, but count for a very low percentage of fatal attacks on humans, below snakes, crocodiles, hippos, elephants, lions and wolves. Out of 150 species of sharks, only 20 species attack humans, due to faulty perception that makes them mistake humans for seals, their favorite meal.

HOW TO AVOID A SHARK ATTACK:

  • Avoid having blood or urine in the water, as sharks can detect it from 11 miles away.
  • Avoid wearing flashy metallic jewelry
  • Don`t swim with your dog
  • Don`t swim at an non-patrolled beach
  • Don`t swim near anglers chumming the water
  • Avoid swimming near dusk or dawn
  • Don`t swim in murky water after heavy rainfall
  • Avoid river mouths, drop-offs, and sandbars
  • Avoid marine life feeding on bait fish.

IF ATTACK IS INEVITABLE:

  • Swimming away from a shark only makes you the bait, so face it and aim to attack the shark at the gills, the nose, and the eyes, their most sensitive exposed body parts. Once the shark is stunned, swim out of the water, calmly and steadily.
  • Never turn your back on the shark or try to escape, it will only make you look like prey. Keep eye contact with the shark.
  • Take control, don`t panic. Most people can survive a shark attack, while others lose it all to panic attacks when faced with such a formidable predator.
